This site is nicely located within the Bay of Biscay, within easy reach of Arcachon town which is a great day out with a wide variety of shops, markets and restaurants.
This site sits high in the sandy dunes overlooking the bay providing spectacular views. From our pitch we had a full view of the bay. Each night when the sun set, the paths came alive with people watching and taking photo’s as the sun went down. This is one of the best sites I have been to for views. We were also very lucky to watch a magnificent thunderstorm coming across the bay. Although, the site is set in a pine forest, so many trees which provide some shade.
The site has all the facilities you would expect for a large complex. Toilets and showers are very nice and kept reasonably clean. There is a local shop and bakery on site providing you with fresh bread in the morning. Two restaurants and takeaway, one of the restaurants has panoramic views of the bay. Swimming pool is good for all abilities. It has one slide and splash area and two nice sized pools. The site also provides evening entertainment during peak season, mainly for children.
The beach is accessed direct from the site but it is a long way down to the beach and a hard walk back up sandy dunes to get back to your site. For some this can be extremely hard and will put people off going to the beach.
If you do go to the beach there is a shuttle ferry you can book to get to Arcachon or the surrounding islands for a fee. This is a great way to get around if you do not want to drive. The beaches are beautiful and the sea is safe for bathing. There is lots of local boats going up and down the bay and if you want a higher view, you can hire a para glider from the site.
Arcachon area also boasts the highest Dunes in Europe and you can visit them at Dune du Pilat. We took a very nice bike ride to this centre which was about 20 min away. Here you can climb to the top of the Dunes. There is steps going up and when at the top the views are amazing. If you go all the way over to the opposite side the beach is lovely and there is a bar down which serves food and beers.
This is a very busy place so expect to be sitting in traffic when arriving during peak season. We spent a few hours sitting in traffic getting to the site and it was like this every day we were here. This meant we were very reluctant to leave the site in our vehicle and so relied on bikes and buses. There is a very good bus service from the site which takes you to Arcachon.
This is a part of France that is well worth a visit, but be warned climbing sand dunes is very hard work and the traffic as mentioned is very busy. Other than this the site is very nice and I would recommend it
